Steel, a discreet ally

Wood takes centre stage in the new building for the vocational school in Winterthur. But supporting it are no fewer than 600 steel components – weighing a total of 450 tonnes – which connect the different parts of the framework. 🔥

Among them are four embedded columns on the ground floor that provide both vertical support for the six upper floors and horizontal stability for the entire structure.

These impressive components, each weighing 13 tonnes , are made from steel sheets up to 10 cm thick and welded with fully penetrated welds. Each joint required 80 weld passes, a real test of endurance!

A reinforcement frame is placed inside the boxes and, once on site, they are filled with concrete, reinforcing the structure at the heart of the column
